Clinical experience
I was appointed Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia at LTHT in 2005, and I work in both Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) and St James’s University Hospital (SJUH). I am dual-accredited in Intensive Care Medicine and in Anaesthesia, and my clinical work extends across both specialties.
Leadership
I have extensive leadership experience, having been Lead Clinician for Adult Critical Care in SJUH for 5 years to 2016, then Clinical Director for Adult Critical Care across all LTHT hospitals until July 2023.
A highlight of my career was to lead my service to a CQC “Outstanding” rating in 2018, and I have comprehensive experience of delivering, developing and leading a high quality service. I was proud to be Clinical Director of the Intensive Care service throughout the pandemic. I was also clinical director for the Nightingale Hospital Yorkshire and the Humber, leading the pandemic surge capacity response for the region from March 2020-March 2021.
In 2016 I completed a Master of Business Administration (MBA) focusing on healthcare management and leadership and have completed training within the NHS in the areas of quality management and incident investigation.
National Roles
I am an elected council member of the Intensive Care Society (ICS), with responsibilities as chair of the learning division and education commitee.
I co-founded the ICS education programme in point-of-care ultrasound (FUSIC), and went on to support this initiative to become the world’s first modular point-of-care ultrasound training programme for intensive care professionals.
I am on the editorial board for the UK General Provision of Intensive Care Services (GPICS) manual, setting clinical and service standards for the specialty of intensive care medicine throughout the NHS.
